Aheitanga- Primary Care Enhanced Capacity Project
This pilot project aims to enhance the scope of pharmacists and offer alternative access points to patients to receive timely treatment.
Pharmacists can treat people with acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and skin infections by using a Standing Order.
Patients who cannot acquire a timely appointment with their general practitioner, cannot afford a virtual appointment or may have to wait at an urgent care facility for extend period, can be assessed then receive appropriate medications and advice at the participating pharmacies.
COPD and skin conditions such as pre-cellulitis, impetigo and boils are chosen because pharmacists commonly and routinely deal with those symptoms in the community.
It is believed that early intervention can prevent people from becoming seriously ill and avoid ending up at the emergency department.
This pilot has been extended until 31 July 2024 in 8 local participating pharmacies across Waitaha, Canterbury. Participating pharmacies*:
Life Pharmacy Ashburton
Life Pharmacy Barrington
Unichem Bishopdale
Unichem Eastern Pharmacy
Unichem Eastgate Pharmacy
Life Pharmacy Hornby
Unichem Medical Corner Rangiora
Unichem Rolleston Central Pharmacy
This pilot project is possible with a special funding grant from Health New Zealand Te Whatu Ora.
The project will be evaluated and CCPG will continue to advocate for these types of enhanced care services in community pharmacy.
*Note: We extend our thanks to Unichem Ricarrton Clinic Pharmacy and Darfield Pharmacy who supported this project in the early stages.
